Julian was until September 2019, the Master of Wellington College and Chief Executive of the Wellington College Group of Academies and Schools, as well as Chairman of the Wellington College Multi Academy Trust. Prior to this he was the Headmaster of Caterham School, one of the UK’s leading independent day and boarding schools. During his time as Master of the Wellington, the College achieved record International Baccalaureate results, which were amongst the best in the world, and the school was named as “Independent Boarding School of the Year”. He was a founding governor of the London Academy of Excellence – now regarded as a model for state-independent school partnerships.
He is now one of the most well known and recognisable names in UK independent education. In 2016, he was named by the London Evening Standard in The Progress 1000 – London’s most influential people. In 2019, he was named in the i25 – one of independent education’s 25 most influential people.
He has been Deputy Head at The Portsmouth Grammar School and Second Master at Hampton School. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, has an MBA in Educational Leadership with a specialism in international schooling, and is the author of several mathematics text books.
He is an inspirational speaker, combining his experience of high-level organisational leadership with tales and lessons from some of the world’s iconic adventure challenges. In 2014, Julian completed an unassisted 1000km trek from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and became one of fewer than 300 people to achieve this feat since Scott and Amundsen in 1912. More recently he has competed in the Marathon des Sables and will attempt to row the Atlantic Ocean in December 2019. He has climbed many famous peaks including Mont Blanc and Gran Paradiso and is in the process of acquiring his freefall skydiving licence.
