The Laureus World Sports Awards, which celebrate the outstanding achievements of sportsmen and sportswomen around the world, returned to Europe in 2016. The Awards were hosted in Germany for the first time, held in Berlin on April 18, 2016.

In front of a global television and online audience, the Awards were attended by the biggest names in sport, both past and present. The event returned to Europe for the first time since London in 2012, after taking place in leading sports cities around the world in recent years, including Rio de Janeiro and Shanghai.

Among the sporting greats who have been named as winners of Laureus Awards since 2000 are Usain Bolt, Novak Djokovic, Michael Schumacher, Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Alex Ferguson, Lewis Hamilton, Rafael Nadal, Pelé, Steve Redgrave, Ronaldo, Kelly Slater, Shaun White, Yelena Isenbayeva and Zinedine Zidane.

Novak Djokovic was honoured with the Laureus World Sportsman Award for the second straight year and for the third time in his career.

Rugby was the other big winner with the All Blacks taking the Laureus Team of the Year Award. They became the first team to win back-to-back Rugby World Cups and the first to win the competition three times. Led by coach Steve Hansen and captain Richie McCaw, who retired afterwards as the most capped player in Test history, they were inspired by Dan Carter, who was named Rugby Player of the Year. This is the sixth time the All Blacks have been nominated for this Award.

It was a triumphant comeback for Carter who missed most of the 2011 Rugby World Cup with an injury and has struggled with problems for
years. In the final he kicked four penalties, two conversions and a drop goal and was named Man of the Match.

He was also named World Rugby Player of the Year after the Rugby World Cup, when the New Zealand All Blacks became the first team to win back-to-back titles. After being awarded with the Laureus Comeback of the Year Award, Dan Carter said: “It’s nice to be recognised for the year I had in 2015. It was a very special year, not only for me, but also for the All Blacks and to be a part of that was amazing.”

Changes in UK school assessments

Front Row Hospitality

We are finding an increasing number of people are asking us about the changes to exams in the British education system. Recent years have seen an overhaul of not just the curriculum but the whole assessment system. The British government, along with Ofqual, the qualifications regulatory body, aim to make the system more rigorous to better prepare students for university and the world of work. For Primary children (4-11), the tests themselves will follow the same format, with children in Year 6 (the end of Key Stage 2) sitting Reading, Maths and SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar) tests. KS2 SATS are only compulsory in state run Primaries and only some Independent schools will use them. The new tests have been changed in content only, to be in line with the New National Curriculum.

Front Row Hospitality

Older pupils will face greater changes. G.C.S.Es and A-Levels are changing. Some new subjects will become available, and some will be discontinued. The way AS and A-levels are structured and taught will change over the coming years with a phased transition. The greatest difference will be in the structure. In recent years, AS levels have formed part of the A-level qualification. These will now be de-coupled meaning that AS results will no longer count towards an A-level qualification but be a stand alone qualification. What this means in practise is that AS Levels will be designed by exam boards to be taught alongside the first year of A-Levels.

The way the courses are taught and assessed will also change. Students will no longer study and be assessed for modules but the qualification will be assessed in the most part by exams at the end of the course, with some subjects containing a coursework element. The content of the courses has been modified with greater input from Universities to facilitate a smoother transition to University study.

These changes have already started to be rolled out, with students being taught the new course from Sept 2015. The first new AS exams will be taken later this year with A-level exams sat in 2017. All new courses will be phased in by 2019.

Q: You must have a crazy social calendar, what do you enjoy most about the Events you attend?

A: I love attending the Events, I have been in this business for over 20 years but don’t get to see the great friends I have met as often as I would like – its great to catch up with people there.

But most importantly its to see the new and up-and-coming talent & designers that are discovered every year with our fail – keeps it fun!

Q: On those rare occasions that you get some time off where do like to go to recharge?

A: When I do get the chance to have break, I love to travel to the sun & sea with my family & friends. Is nothing better than to properly unwind. I love Scuba-diving, surfing, and walking - all that fits the Portland sun & sea brand, actually, hahaha!

Q: You spend a fair amount of time in Paris, where do you spend any time off you get in Paris - In the endless luxury boutiques or the famous bistros?

A: Paris is always far too fleeting for me. I love the city and when I do get the chance – I walk the streets and take in the atmosphere. The architecture is so stunning, it all adds to the glamour of the city… and the odd bistro too, of course!

Q: Next Model Management always has a fresh and vibrant amount of talent to work with – who are you current hot talent & why?

A: We have such a great spread of Talent, and keep discovering some great ones. Jack Guinness, Alexa Chung, Lana Del Ray, Ben Howard,

Q: Portland England is made in the UK, using natural ingredients, and using women’s cosmetic techniques and designs… but for Men– how do you like the product?

A: I really do. Its very fresh and has the sea smell to it which gives me great memories. Am a fan!

Q: The team behind Portland England sail, surf and swim, and know first hand the damaging effect the sea and weather can have on your skin – what skin protection do you use on surf & ski trips?

A: I use a moisturiser after of course, but always wear suit block to be sure – even if the sun isn’t so obvious - it never hurts to apply it.

Q: What & who are you most excited about in the near future and in your calendar?

A: We have the Men’s London Fashion Week coming up in June which is always fun, and Alfie Fashion Dog has a few exciting engagements that HAVE to be kept to!! ;)
